Top 10 Reasons Your Garage Door Isn’t Working Properly

Garage Door MaintenanceThe convenience of having a garage door to be able to come and go from your home with ease is something many people enjoy being able to use. But when this convenience that so many of us use stops working, it can become quite the hassle and frustration. Here are the top ten reasons why your garage isn’t working properly.

The Batteries are Dead or Weak

The remote or the keyless entry pad to open and close the garage could be in need of new batteries.  Cross your fingers for this to be the reason, it is probably the easiest and most simple solution to why the garage door isn’t working.

The Sensor Eyes are Dirty or Blocked

The sensors need to be able to communicate in order to clear the motor to bring the door open and shut. The sensors check for obstructions for safety reasons. Check the sensor and see if they need to be wiped clean, if there is something blocking the sensor or if the sensors have become misaligned. \

The Motor is Going Out

Just like in a car the motor eventually gets enough use that it quits working. If it is the motor it may be repairable or it may need to be replaced.

The Torsion Spring Is Worn Out

The torsion spring is what makes it possible to be able to lift and lower the garage door. Garage doors aren’t light and over time the torsion spring will eventually stop working.

Check the Power Supply

The power supply to the unit may be the issue. Check around the unit for any wires or loose connections first. If everything  seems to be intact next step is to check the breaker. Reset the house breaker or fuse that supplies the power to the garage door and see if that fixes.

There is a Misalignment

The tracks that guide the path of the door to open and close could be off alignment. This track could be blocked by debris or it could be damaged or bent causing the misalignment and the door to not work properly.

Needs to Be LubricatedThe tracks and the moving pieces may have become stiff over time and it could use some lubrication to help get them working as they should.

Worn Parts

There are a lot of parts that go into keeping the garage door opening and closing as it should. Parts like the springs, rollers, cables, motor pieces and more. Over time from wear and tear these parts will need to be replaced and repaired.

The Safety Sensors

Garage doors have a lot of safety measures to prevent injuries to people. If one of these safety sensors is detecting a problem they will prevent the garage door from opening or closing. Look for any safety concerns and reset the system to see if it clears of any problems.

There is a Blockage

Any obstruction along the path of the garage door could be preventing it’s functioning. Check along the path of the door for any possible obstructions that are preventing the door for working. Look for things like debris on the tracks, or for things like shovel handles that might be in the way.
