Dealing with a loud screeching sound when you open the garage door can be painful for your ears. Why do doors start to squeak and what can we do to prevent this from happening? Most garage doors will start to squeak dues to dryness and rust. Correct lubrication can solve the majority of garage door noise issues, but there are some other options you can try for smoother operation.
Tightening the Door
All the nuts and bolts on the garage door will need to be tightened over the years. Some will end up becoming loose, which causes the noise to occur. As you go around and tighten the nuts and bolts, look for any broken or worn-out parts that need to be replaced. A crack in the garage door will need professional repair as we will need to replace a section of the door, or add support beams to the door until you can afford a new garage door.
Rollers and Hinges
Track rollers have unsealed bearings that start to cause noise as they get older. Since the garage is prone to weather-issues that bring in dust and dirt, the track rollers can easily end up becoming worn down. The wear on the rollers can lead them to wobble when the door is opening and closing. We can replace the worn rollers with nylon rollers with sealed bearings. The nylon rollers are quieter, and they do not require periodic oiling like the steel rollers.
Garage Door Chain
The garage door chain can end up becoming noisy if it is not tight. Watch the chain to notice if it sways when you open and close the door. The chain will need routine maintenance to keep it well-oiled and tight. We will lubricate the track with grease if you have a track drive opener. A screw drive opener requires grease in the threads to prevent noise, and to allow the door to open and close correctly.
To maintain your garage door, we sell lubricant you can use to care for the rollers and springs. Never use silicone or lithium sprays as they will wear out the springs and rollers quickly. Most homeowners do not realize they can cause squeaking to occur with the wrong spray as it does end up causing grease, oil, dirt, and other things to stick to the rollers.
Hinges
Homeowners can do some routine maintenance by spraying the hinges with garage door lubrication. The torsion bar bearings and pivot points must all be sprayed annually to help the door work correctly, and to reduce noise.
Routine maintenance can go a long way to increase the lifespan of your garage door, and provide you with the peace and quiet you need. Call Advanced Door today if you are dealing with a garage door that is squeaking (801) 430-9021.
