How much horsepower do I need for a two-car garage door?
For a standard 16×7 insulated double-car garage door, we recommend 3/4 HP. If the door is non-insulated and lightweight, 1/2 HP may work. If the door is wood, oversized, or has wind reinforcement, consider 1 HP. In Utah, 3/4 HP is our standard recommendation for double-car doors because of the heavier insulated doors needed for our climate.
Is a 1/2 HP garage door opener enough?
A 1/2 HP opener is enough for a standard single-car door that weighs under 150 pounds. For double-car doors, insulated doors, or cold-climate use, 1/2 HP is often borderline. The motor will work harder, run hotter, and wear out faster. Stepping up to 3/4 HP costs only $30-$75 more and provides significantly better performance and longevity.
Can I put a 3/4 HP opener on a light door?
Yes. A higher-HP opener on a lighter door simply means the motor runs at a lower percentage of its capacity, which is actually easier on the unit. It will run cooler, quieter, and last longer. There is no downside to slight oversizing as long as you do not drastically exceed the door’s weight class.
What happens if my opener does not have enough horsepower?
An underpowered opener will strain, overheat, and wear out prematurely. Symptoms include slow door movement, motor running hot, frequent stalling or reversing, overheating shutdowns, and shortened opener lifespan. The motor is forced to work at or near maximum capacity on every cycle, which dramatically accelerates wear on all internal components.
Does a higher HP opener use more electricity?
Not significantly. A garage door opener runs for about 15-30 seconds per cycle. Even at 20 cycles per day, the total runtime is under 10 minutes. The electricity cost difference between a 1/2 HP and 3/4 HP motor is less than $2 per year. Additionally, a motor running at lower capacity often draws less current per cycle than an identical motor running at maximum.
How do I know what HP my current opener is?
Check the sticker on the back or side of the motor housing. It will list the HP or HPe rating along with the model number. If the sticker is worn or missing, search the model number on the manufacturer’s website. You can also check the manual if you still have it. If you cannot determine the rating, call us and we can identify it during a free inspection.
Should I get a 1 HP opener just to be safe?
For most standard residential doors, 1 HP is more than needed and the extra cost is not justified. 3/4 HP handles the vast majority of residential doors with plenty of headroom. Save the 1 HP for genuinely heavy doors: solid wood, oversized custom doors, or doors with heavy wind reinforcement. Can I upgrade my opener’s motor without replacing the whole unit?
In most cases, no. The motor, gearbox, and drive system are engineered as a matched set. Swapping just the motor would create mismatched components and void the warranty.
